How to Erase Your iPhone Before Selling — Step by Step
Before you sell your iPhone, make sure to erase all data and sign out of iCloud. Here is how.
Before selling your iPhone, you should erase all personal data and sign out of iCloud. This protects your privacy, removes the Activation Lock so the buyer can use the device, and ensures the transaction goes smoothly. Here is how to do it.
Step 1: Back Up Your iPhone
Before erasing anything, back up your iPhone to iCloud or your computer. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then tap Back Up Now. Or connect to your computer and back up via Finder or iTunes. This protects all your photos, contacts, messages and apps.
Step 2: Sign Out of iCloud (Disable Activation Lock)
Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password and tap Turn Off. This is the most important step — signing out disables the Activation Lock, which prevents the buyer from using the device. An iCloud-locked iPhone is worth less.
Step 3: Factory Reset
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. Enter your passcode if prompted. The phone will erase all data and restore to factory settings. This usually takes a few minutes.
What Happens If You Forget?
If you sell an iCloud-locked iPhone, the buyer cannot use it without your Apple ID credentials. This significantly reduces the price we can offer. Make sure to sign out before the meeting — call 0435 277 611 if you are unsure and we will walk you through it.
